This is a 70′s adaptation of Choon-Hyang that centers around two sidekicks, Bang-Ja and Hyang-Dan. Popular comedy actors from that period provide social-satire in an implicit manner disguised within a classical story, while Bang-Ja’s character shows the harsh lives young males from the countryside were subjected to in the 70′s. Yet, traditional portrayals of Mong-Ryong and Choon-Hyang do not harmonize with the film′s comedic nature, with both Bang-Ja (as a bartender) and Lord Byun (as a crooked high-yielding money launderer) rendered as realistic characters. Thus, it is interesting to see the role of Mong-Ryong in this modernized version of Choon-Hyang. Although not a polished production, the film′s B-movie like pleasure is still evident nonetheless, especially considering Korea′s bleak, oppressed film industry and political scene of the 70′s.
