Program Note
After the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, members of the pro-democracy movement fear that their lives are in danger. Even if they survived, as many as 200,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and search for freedom elsewhere. Myanmar Diaries condemns the government’s violence and at the same time captures people’s actions for a better future with a small camera. What should be noted as much as the public authorities’ ruthless violation of human rights and the brave citizens who took to the streets is the situation in which the directors and the staff cannot but remain anonymous. Hopefully there will come a day when the end credits of Myanmar Diaries can be remade. (KIM Bo-nyun)

The Myanmar Film Collective
Formed in the aftermath of the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, the Myanmar Film Collective is a group of anonymous young filmmakers who resist and communicate with the world through film. Their work is especially important because the press in Myanmar is under the control of the military regime, and therefore any news is censored. Myanmar Diaries, which exposes the regime’s crimes, won the Berlinale Documentary Award and the Amnesty International Film Award.
