Program Note
Blue Island is a moving documentary that proposes to look back at Hong
Kong’s unfinished democratic revolution from a more comprehensive
historical perspective. Since the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement in
2014, the image of courageous Hong Kong citizens has been covered a great
deal in the news, and the Umbrella Revolution, with its powerful imagery,
informed many people of the sad reality of Hong Kong. However, relatively
little is known about what happened in Hong Kong before its return to China.
The director remembers through reenactments how the older generation
has also fought for freedom and democracy, through the Cultural Revolution
and the Tiananmen Square protests. In the end, Hong Kong’s youth are
reminded that their struggles are not of individuals but of the collective
writing a new page in Hong Kong’s history. (KIM Bo-nyun)
