Program Note
This version is from Hong Sung-Ki, a leading director of melodrama of the late 50’s, with his then-wife KIM Ji-Mi starring in the title role. The very first cinemascope color film ever to be shown in Korea, the film attracted advanced investments from many financiers, yet was poorly received by both the critics and the audiences. Still, it kept the traditional atmosphere by having the soundtrack entirely made of Korean classical music
Director

Hong Seong Kie
Born in 1924, Hong Seong-Kie came back to Korea in 1946 upon graduating from the Manchurian National Film School.
He began his career at Korea Films working as an assistant director to Choi In-Kyu. Hong made his feature debut with 1949? A Diary of Woman and became one of the leading directors in the melodramatic genre. He is also known as a skillful film editor and cinematographer, whose film career, unfortunately, plummeted with the failure of Choon-Hyang Jeon.
