Upon hearing the news about the redevelopment of the Kolon Shopping Mall in Cheonho-dong, Won Taewoong, the director of Universe Department Store, recalls the Universe Department Store that opened in the 1980s and shut down in three years. There used to be a spaceship-shaped ride in front of the store, but the director doesn’t remember what it looked like. He tries hypnosis to trace his childhood memories and interviews people who remember the department store, but everyone remembers the ride differently. Recording the scenery of Cheonho-dong in the 1980s as well as how it looks today after numerous transformations, while shaping the path of memories about places through dreamy images, Universe Department Store is a film that depicts the director’s inner memories in a fascinating form.
