Program Note
In Singapore in 2020, a drag performer named Opera Tang makes her debut in
a pink dress as people cheer her on. She has her drag performance, through
which she finds a best friend, and her lover, but the world surrounding her
is not always pleasant. The conservative beliefs of her Catholic family, the
ban on gay sex, and the system of conscription are harsh realities that she
must face every day. The film illumines a person who has fiercely expanded
her territory on these complex boundaries. The relationship between Opera
Tang and her nonagenarian grandmother is particularly impressive—
it is surprising to see the old woman alter Tang’s clothes for her and even
accompany her to LGBTQ events. The emotions that she must feel when
she gives a not-so-simple answer when Tang asks her to make her wedding
dress someday. This film gives us some insight into the present and daily life
of Singapore’s queer society. (JEONG Jihye)
