Program Note
Violence sneaks up on us, destroying our everyday lives. From political terrorism to kidnapping, the spectrum of violence is colorful. <Captive> paints a panoramic picture of 20 international tourists who are held hostage by the Muslim separatist group ASG at a vacation resort. The ASG kidnaps the 20 men and women and takes them to the Basilan Islands. There, they begin to summarize and evaluate the ransom the group of 20 will command. The film adds different shades and colors to the spectrum of violence by depicting the journey from the island to the jungles via a hospital in the manner of a road movie. The camera relentlessly captures each character's personal journey as easily as it does the thrilling chase between the terrorist group and the government forces hot on their trail. And within the confines of the chase, the treachery of the jungle, the news of the fall of the World Trade Center and the violence bestowed upon the hostages by their captors fills the crevices.
