Program Note
A Harana is a traditional Filipino serenade and Florente Aguila is the world’s renowned Harana musician. Aguila is seeking out a true Harana master. Once wooed to the girl’s heart, these Harana masters are now common farmers. Their passion for Harana remains the same and they perform their hidden Haranas one by one to be recorded. From recording to concert, the farmers indulge their passion for singing. <Serenade> is a film about music. Rather than getting into a cultural and historical examination, the film focuses on people’s lives and how the music fits into them. It is more important where they sing, whom they sing to, and most of all, with what kind of emotion. To enchant and win the heart of the beloved is the reason for its being. Harana is meaningless without desperate passion and hope. In the process of finding the Harana musicians, we encounter beautiful music teeming with passion. (CHO Young-jung)
