Program Note
<Chiri> is a collection of memories and a goodbye by director Kawase Naomi for her late grandmother, the woman that raised her after she was separated from her parents at an early age. The grandmother that had been by her side since childhood cannot help but start to lose her vitality when faced with the march of time. Regretfully and almost too late, Kawase starts recording her last days. But there are no recollections of despair or sadness, simply a completing chapter in the life her grandmother had been living. Her final days overlap with past images taken from old dust-covered photographs and faded family video, images of a woman wearing a shy, kind smile. Just as her grandmother warmed Kawase’s childhood, the youth of her children is brightened. (CHO Young-jung)
