Program Note
With the exception of the main character and the director, this films used primarily Polish actors and crew, and was made in Poland. Nevertheless, this film refuses to be an exotic spectacle or a depiction of self-made Korean expatriates. On the contrary, this films carries a universal sensibility. Kim has been roaming around Europe after youthful troubles lead to the separation from his wife and daughter, and settles down in Poland to opens a Taekwondo gym. He meets Yola, a petty thief who dreams of leaving Poland for the new world, and Mihau who barely manages life. Their somewhat fateful meeting evokes emotions Kim had long buried, and deepens Kim′s longing for his daughter whom he has not seen for ten years.
Eventually Kim leaves Poland to be reunited with his daughter who denies his existence. For the three wanderers, family and community exist as the nostalgic past. Kim′s daughter, the family photos of Yula and Mihau, and the Polish countryside are beautiful memories they can share but are represent times that are dead to them. The martial art of taekwondo which Kim performs for the two is also a remnant of a time when the mind was in perfect harmony with the body. This is perhaps why the fate of those who cannot forget what cannot be restored is portrayed as a miserable condition in this film. (Lim Kyung-Hun)
