Program Note
The family of a widowed mother comprises her and her three grown children. The widow is secretly seeing another man. The older daughter, who is married with two children, dreams of another life. The younger daughter, the only one living with her mother, is having an affair with her boss. The youngest of them, the son breaks into cars and sells stolen goods to make a living. A family only in name, they lack affection and have lost all emotional connection to one another. There are no mutual interests in one another’s affairs, and their own relationships are mired in the routine and fragmented. These tenuous relationships take a turn for the extreme when the widow decides to sell her late husband’s old BMW and perhaps leave town for good. What will become of this broken family? Malaysian director James Lee started his career as a screenwriter and continues to showcase a diverse range of talents and astute observational skills that result in crossing the boundary between commercial and independent filmmaking.
