Program Note
In 2046, an AI named Salvation senses the end of the world. A group of artists are the only ones who can stop it. The Resisters, as they call themselves, recognize that their artistic performance is the only thing that can save humanity by creating new activities. The idea of the Resisters performing in various underpass, or “sound underpass,” where sounds resonate, is actually an ingenious contrivance, a clever narrative camouflage and lure. The appeal of Sorigouldri:The Sound Underpass is its cultural guerrilla playfulness, which is premised on the wild brazenness, and recklessness and pretentiousness that doesn’t hesitate to disregard the plausibility and verisimilitude, or cinematic skill and categorization. This blatant and unapologetic playfulness is what makes the film both an exhilarating mess and a disturbing shamanic apocalypse. (JUNG Hanseok)
