Program Note
El Moudir’s exploration of identity through her mother in The Postcard (2020) continues through the grandmother in her latest film, which delves into the Moroccan contemporary history through a family and the grandmother. At its core lies the people’s resistance against the government’s food policy of 1981. The dolls and miniatures handcrafted by the director’s parents set the stage, and the drama unfolds with the neighbor who had witnessed tragic events. The beautiful yet sorrowful stage appears like an eternal dream, a fairy tale about the loftily shed blood. The grandmother, who once surveilled, suspected, and commanded like a tyrant, metaphorizes the year 1981; while the revived time reconstruct forgotten, shattered memories. Today, when the slaughterer has come to power and martyrs are buried in places unknown, the tyrant burns and bans photographs to erase memories. In the face of this reality, the director declares: “Those with mouths, speak up.” (LEE Yong Cheol)
