Program Note
Melodrama, although considered a familiar genre, changes styles during each period. Director Kwak Ji-Kyun established the conventions of the 80′s, and now seems to be seeking a new approach for the 90′s. The love triangle between three childhood buddies Eunsuh, Suhwan and Hyunseh is the basic storyline of this film. The narrative is not chronological, but is told from each characters′ point-of-view. Eunsuh, living with memories of a miserable past is incapable of making Suhwan, the woman he loves happy. Form a distance, Hyunseh tries to protect the vulnerable Eunsuh. The three friends reach the point where ties must be broken. Suhwan joins a gang, and Hyunseh and Eunsuh start a new life as a married couple. But, the three end up hurting each other, and Hyunseh continues to accuse Eunsuh of being unfaithful to him. Their lives are affected by a "deep blue sadness." not only the result of their own past but a part of their parent′s as well. This vicious cycle reiterates the fact that true love can never be achieved through the isolated language of love. (Lee Yong-Kwan)
