Program Note
Min-woo, a young man who works at a community center in a small village, lives with his father and grandmother and often hangs out with his best friend Sung-hoon. The weather doesn’t always favor the farmers, and Min-woo continues his quiet life. That’s the whole story of Last Summer. Events rarely happen, and when they do, they are not events, but rites of passage to be respected. As drought and rainy season pass by, the silent, slow shots alternate between the bounty of nature and the simple faces of the villagers. With the utmost respect, the film inserts the dramatized lives of Min-woo and his family into the real lives of the villagers. Last Summer has a sincere farmer’s demeanor and a warm poet’s heart. Its respectful poetry with a sense of providence and order lingers long afterward. (JUNG Hanseok)
