Olfa, who lives in Tunisia, has four daughters. One day, her two elder daughters vanish—the teens have left for Libya to join the Islamic State. Based on actual events that took place in Tunisia in 2015, Four Daughters is a documentary that rehashes the tragedy of Olfa’s family. Renowned actress Hend Sabri joined this project as Olfa, along with the actors who played the two runaway girls. Through the actors, particularly Hend Sabri, Olfa looks back on her own past and her daughters’ traces as both a concerned party and an observer, a speaker and a witness. In this process, the audience comes to face Olfa—a contradictory mother with a wretched fate, who was both violent and oppressive. Competing in the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the film won L’Oeil d’or (Golden Eye). (LEE Juhyun)
