Program Note
Gynecologist Gui-nam and his wife, Wu-hee, find themselves unable to have a child. They have a good life now, but they need to have a child to inherit the property of Wu-hee’s father. Mi-ja and Dal-soo are a poor unmarried couple living in destitute neighborhood. Mi-ja is straightforward, but Dal-soo is a bit naive. When faced with an unplanned pregnancy, the poor couple decides to terminate the pregnancy, but when they visit the gynecologist, they meet Gui-nam and Woo-hee and decide to give the child to the wealthy couple in exchange for money. In addition to the dramatic tension of the story, which cleverly builds up from scene to scene, the movie also benefits from the characters and the actors’ performances, which remain vividly alive throughout the movie. The contrast between the two couples is sometimes hilarious, sometimes wistful, and in many ways entertaining. (JUNG Hanseok)
