Program Note
Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrested apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea to Canada. Two decades later, they are reunited in New York for one fateful week as they confront notions of destiny and love, and the choices that make a life. Past Lives is a touching and delicate romantic drama about love and friendship between a man and a woman who were childhood sweetheart. It is written and directed by the Korean American playwright, Celine Song in her feature directorial debut starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro. When it was world-premiered in Sundance, it instantly became everyone’s favorite. It was invited to many other film festivals around the world including Berlin afterwards and praised as the most surprising feature debut and possibly one of the best films of the year. Now, it’s finally revealing itself to Korean audiences.
