High school is a period of uncertainty: uncertain love, uncertain dreams. <THE TOWN OF WHALES> is a story about a girl and her friends who take a summer trip to find her brother who ran away six years earlier. One part coming-of-age drama, one part road movie, the film leaves us with an open ending wherein the girls’ lives are yet to be discovered. One day during summer vacation, Machi receives a package of peaches from an acquaintance of her long-missing brother. She decides to go find him and heads to Tokyo with her friends Tomihiko and Hotaru, with whom she has conflict-ridden relationships. In Tokyo, they meet Komura, her brother’s transvestite friend that doesn’t actually know his whereabouts. Through Komura, she recalls a series of little details about her brother and his memories, which makes her miss him even more. While repeatedly bickering and reconciling, Machi, Tomihiko and Hotaru come to a deeper understanding of each other on the short journey that ultimately helps them slowly grow to adulthood.
