Program Note
Five years has passed since the acclaim for Chang’s The End of the Tunnel, and this year he unveils <Touch of the Light>, a feature film version of that short. Based on a true story of Yuhsiang, a blind pianist, the film opens with a scene where the young man leaves his family and enrolls in a university in Taipei. Though blind from birth Yushiang has a special talent for piano. His life on his own starts new, and it includes a friendship with Chieh, a young woman that gave up her dream of dancing because her poor family couldn’t afford the education she needed. Chieh is influenced by Yuhsiang’s strong will and passion, and she makes up her mind to realize her dream regardless of the obstacles. The film is moving not just because of its basis in reality, but also because it delivers its theme earnestly. Chang intended to explore the duo’s difficulties and the ways they overcome them in a documentary style, and that tone lends <Touch of the Light> a perfect touch of veracity. (KIM Ji-Seok)
