Program Note
The abandoned Char, an island suffering massive erosion due to the change in the river’s currents stemming from dam construction, lies between Bangladesh and India. The inhabitants’ only means of survival is supply grain and smuggling. Everyday, people travel back and forth between India and Bangladesh, searching for work?some smuggling drugs while dodging the military police. Fourteen-yea-old Lubel must find work to support his unemployed parents, his younger sibling and an older sister on the verge of being divorced because she did not have a dowry. But who will give a young boy like Rubel a job? The film follows the lives of the inhabitants whose island is disappearing before their very eyes. Through this young boy and the changes he undergoes, we see a people abandoned by their government who must succumb to the harsh reality of nature and policy. It is much more than a geological observation but a story that will touch our hearts. (CHO Young-jung)
