As a young man, Mohsen Makhmalbaf served time in jail for an attack on police while demonstrating against the Palebi Administration. Now a middle-aged filmmaker, he recruited actors for a film based on that incident. Mohsen had a reasons to re-enact his past - to deliver the message that the notion of ′revolution through violence′ is meaningless and only love and reconciliation can offer redemption. Mohsen attempted to put forth the notions of love and salvation for the general public living in current Iranian society. It′s unknown whether he anticipated it, but the actors starring in this film were sharing this very opinion, so their ideals were in perfect harmony. Mohsen uses extremely complex style that seems quite simple on the surface. The boundary between reality and fiction is quite ambiguous and sometimes time both flows back and forth. In addition, Mohsen himself appears within the film to reveal himself assuming the role of a director in self-reflexive manner. Furthermore, he shows the maturing images of both himself and the actors during the filmmaking process. In the end, the terminus of all these styles and themes is an ideal called ′love and reconciliation.′ (Kim Ji-Seok)
