Program Note
A girl′s dream of voluntarily leaving school to make films is perhaps much more dramatic than a film itself. She learned film from her father, and finally came to make films with her own ideas. The Apple, her first film, made at the age of 18, was invited to ′Un Certain Regard′ of Cannes Film Festival, and Blackboards, her second film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes this year. The
girl is Samira Makhmalbaf.
What makes it possible to achieve such an accomplishment, which has no precedent in film history? How Samira Made ′Blackboards′ juxtaposes the process of making the film with various events during the Cannes Film Festival, demonstrating her thought and love for film. Mohsen Makhmalbat, Samira′s father, does not appear on the film. It only shows Samira passionately focusing on directing her film. Maysam′s intention is clear. He wants to expunge the unnecessary conjecture that of Mohsen′s influence on Samira′s work. Showing only of her images in interviews, it reveals enough of that she is an intelligent and creative director, much more mature than her age. (Kim Ji-Seok)
