Program Note
Prejudice lingers on the Slovak-Moravian border, where teen neo-Nazi Marek leads an alienated life with only his pet dog named Killer for friendship. While acting as a messenger between his father and absent mother he uncovers a troubling secret that leads to a tragically confused act of violence. The film desperately sends a warning message about the neo-Nazism that is encroaching on Eastern Europe. What is new about the film is that it approaches the familiar issue of the persecution of gypsies by focusing on an individual’s perspective, not on collective violence. The film vividly describes the teenage character’s confused state of mind caught between the voice from society and that from his inner world. The new director’s talent is clearly seen at the end of the film as the story reaches its peak; the family relationship, which used to oppress the main character, finds its resolution in an extreme manner. The director’s outstanding feature debut won the Tiger Award at this year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam. (RHEE Soue-won)
