Teenaged Bianca’s world is upended after the tragic death of her parents. Agreeing to aid her younger brother Tomas in a ridiculous heist involving blind, aging B-movie star and hermit Maciste, Bianca unexpectedly finds the normalcy and acceptance she so desperately needs. Il Futuro, winner of the KNF Award at this year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam, was made in Rome by a Chilean director. Alicia Scherson’s careful mise-en-scene and background setting are clearly seen in the film. Since the main character doesn’t like light, the story mostly takes place in dark indoor places and on nighttime streets. Consequently, the use of indoor lighting is very creative. As the female character’s narration flows throughout the film, the characters’ inner worlds are expressed with visual elements in a highly sensitive way, and the ideas and ideals of Cinecitta and B-movies make the film more enjoyable. This is a mysterious love story that approaches the audience with the tactile sense in the gaze of female protagonist. (RHEE Soue-won)
