Program Note
Two lives unfold in parallel in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Emma is a young woman who brings home sand from construction sites to fill her cat’s litterbox. Hasan, who works at a glass factory, steals silica sand from work to make glass, dreaming of starting his own business one day. In this unique film, the lives of the two protagonists remain at a distance and never intersect. The only thing that connects them is sand. As the title suggests, sand symbolizes the chaotic, isolated, and uncertain life in metropolitan Dhaka, a city that is endlessly under construction even while crumbling before our eyes. Its foundation is unstable, like a transmission tower standing tall in sand. Through elegant camerawork of cinematographer Mathieu Giombini, it portrays Dhaka itself as another main character alongside the two protagonists. (HONG Soin)
