Program Note
The disintegration of family that has become a common Koereasocial phenomenon is expressed through the two character of this film. Having just finished military service, Makdoong dreams of his family members living together as they did before. However, as everyone is too busy making a living he schemes to become rich. Bae Tae-Gon is a gang leader who has no qualms about using people. Despite the fact that these two character are total opposites, they share similarities that represent the distortions of Korean society. Makdoong continuously fails at getting a job, Bae Tae-Gon flaunts his pwer, and Mieh, Bae Tae-Gon′s girlfriend cannot help from riding night trains. What these three dream of accomplishing is perhaps what they try so hard to escape from. The lase scene, shor withe the seriousness of film noir, reveals the dirty side of survival through Bae Tae-Gon′s act of betrayal. The food chain that these characters are part of is a reflection of our society′s weaknesses. (Lee Yong-Kwan)
