Program Note
Haewon is dating a married professor, Sungjoon, and when they accidentally run into other students and try to hide their relationship, it doesn’t come easily. She tries to end the relationship repeatedly, but that’s not easy either. The film’s title seems to hold little meaning, but it is actually quite significant. It puts in writing that Haewon is “nobody’s daughter,” but begins with Haewon coming out to meet her mother. She takes a casual walk with her mother, who will soon be heading overseas, and runs into Jane Birkin, and tells her she wishes she were her daughter. Haewon is someone’s daughter but she is also hiding an affair and wants to leave the country. But those things do not define Haewon’s life. Through the film, we look on sympathetically at Haewon, as though watching our own daughters. (NAM Dong-chul)
