Program Note
With its claims for disregarding norms and principles, the social context which this film depicts raised both controversy and appraisal among Korean viewers. Film critic Kang Han-Sup described this film as "a success in its efforts to go inside the lives of teenagers and present them as they really are."
The two part story depicts the lives of teenage street kids and street beggars living at Seoul Station, and in pseudo documentary style in challenges the boundary characters who represent the faces of transgression: teenage bikers who rob people, and whose rebellion against older generations involve various temptations, even selling their bodies. As for street beggars, their transgressions are against routine lives and consumption as they leave their families to live and die in the streets.
The fast tempo of this complex narrative reinforces the level of confusion but perhaps this is the very commentary the director is making. It is true there still needs to be more time for contemplation, to see whether this film shares the values of an ′open cinema′. However, there is no doubt that this film uncovers society′s hypocrisy.
