Program Note
In Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital city, nearly 7,000 buskers, earn a living by performing in the streets. This film follows the lives of three such people. They are Titi who lives under a bridge; Ho, who want to fall in love and make a family; and Bonnie, who is preparing for the diploma examination in hope of a better life. Director Daniel Ziv followed their lives for five years to show another side of colorful Jakarta. The story of their lives is one of hope rather than despair. The home under a bridge can become a high-class hotel depending on how one looks at it. The meeting with a prospective marriage partner allows for sweet dreams of a happy future. They sing of their tired life and hope in a moving bus. At times sorrowful and at times merry, their song overlaps with the lively city in the background and the tired people within it. The close bond with characters developed over the long shooting period makes the film a powerful drama. (CHO Young-jung)
