Program Note
In his debut film Danav, Markand Deshpande featured a legend about forgiveness and calvation, Deshpande once again crosses the border of gods and humans focusing on love and calvation, In a small village in India called Rampur, Hiralal′s wife commits suicide cursing a goddess. Hiralal is worried that this might invite a disaster on him and offers a virgin named Bhagwati to a temple. Pagla, who lives in the temple, marries Bhagwati and leaves for the city against strong oppositions. With Pagla′s drum play, Bhagwati is possessed by a goddess. Soon she fulfills the wishes of other people and is revered as a goddess. However, her body is
exhausted after a while and the couple returns to Rampur. The villagers assault Bhagwati on the account of bringing bad luck to the village. Meanwhile, Pagla is put behind bars on false charges of theft. After his escape from the prison, he goes on a killing spree. He denies the gods, but after the death of his wife, he once again resorts to the gods. Markand Deshpaande shares his perspective on religion and the world by exploring the religious and philosophical themes with an appropriate mix of his commercial touch. (Kim Ji-seok)
