Program Note
A fatner and his three sons live in a crumbling apartment building, soon to be torn down. The father is a fake fortuneteller. The grown-up sons all have different mothers. They despise the father and all lead completely isolated lives from each other. Soon-e, a girl who sells cookies on highways, moves into this abnormal house. The four men in the house start falling in love with her and try to win her heart. While So Cute is about slum life, it doesn′t have any realistic or humanistic touches. The setting is about to collapse, the characters are hopelessly ill-fated, and their lives are in chaos. Yet the film is unbelievably bright, cheerful and exciting, almost reminiscent of Emir Kusturica′s films. It seems almost magical to see rainbows painted in dirty water and flowers blooming in a heap of trash. So Cute is a hopeful film for the hopeless.
