Program Note
Priest Henri Kremer is an inmate at Dachau. As an outspoken critic of the Reich, Kremer has been arrested and interned. Daily he suffers starvation, over-work, and beatings. He and his fellow priests live in filth, and hope that they don′t succumb to typhus or to the cold. And then one day, it′s over - and Kremer is released. But all is not as it seems. He is asked by the Gestapo to aid them in convincing the Bishop of Luxembourg to make a public statement supporting German policy. When it becomes clear that the Bishop will not agree, Kremer is offered a deal: make a statement himself and go free. Remain silent - and critical - and go back
to Dachau in nine days. The 9th Day tackles the conundrum of identifying the greater good. The theological debate presented by the chance to save scores of people and compromising on convictions is at the
heart of the film. Kremer need only to compromise to save himself, his fellow priests and countless others. The only victim may be his conscience.
