Program Note
Friends Jan and Peter are "The Edukators," young, rebellious and non-violent agitators who break into the homes of wealthy people and leave messages warning that their time in such positions is coming to an end. Jule is Peter′s girlfriend, who is in debt to a man, Hardenberg, who could easily be one of their targets. Jan and Jule′s break-in of his house sets the stage for an impromptu kidnapping. They call Peter, and the four of them flee to the mountains. At thie point the kidnapped businessman reveals that there is far more to him than meets the eve a the rebel trio are forced to confront the values of the ruling elite. The Edukators is a surprising and original thriller. Writer-director Hans Weingartner spent years seeking a political movement he could feel part of and also lived in a squat for a time, which explain the reason Jan, Peter and Jule are such fully fleshed characters. The film takes place at a time - now - where nothing is truly subversive, and todays power-wielding conservatives were yesterday′s rebels.
