Program Note
Director Aleksey Gorlov’s second feature is an experimental film executed in a single take. It makes sharp criticisms of the selfish nature of mankind. The Ruslan mansion is busy preparing for visitors. Mother of the family, Anna, is also brought home from her long-term stay at the hospital. When Anna ultimately realizes that it was money, not love, that caused her son and his wife to bring her home after years of neglect in a hospital, she is devastated. Aleksey Gorlov shoots the entire film in one take, starting from Anna’s arrival home, all the way to the very last scene. During the 75 minutes of running time, each meticulously calculated camera angle and detailed movement of the actors shows off the advantages of this demanding directing choice. Liya Nelskaya is an astounding Anna. Marvellously portraying a woman half-paralyzed, Nelskaya must express heightened emotions of anger, sadness, and pain all through minute facial expressions.
