A cinema about cinema, [My Spectacular Theatre] grants viewers a warm and moving emotion. A pirated DVD dealer, Chen Yu, meets the people who change his life forever when he enters a theater for the blind while running from police. They include the owner, Gao, who opened the theater for his late blind wife; a nearly blind photographer, Zhang; Zhang’s admirer, Liu May; and Xiao Ow, who comes to the theater only to see her beloved Chen Yu. Movies are something of much bigger than entertainment to them. It is a medium they communicate their emotions through and a jewelry box of past memories. The blind “viewers” who are immersed in movies only through voice and sound may be the most enthusiastic fandom of cinema. Director Lu Yang describes the life journey where Chen Yu realizes the meaning of love and life through the people in the blind theater. It speaks the wisdom that beauty is beyond what one can see and that makes this movie a love letter for cinema as a whole. (KIM Ji-seok)
