Program Note
Reality is to director Hong Sangsoo what alcohol is to an alchemist. The harmony and cacophony of his world combine with a cold view of reality which actually reveals a warm concern toward life - this is perhaps the "power" of Kangwon province. Ji-Sook takes a trip to Kangwon province following a breakup with a married man. There she meets and becomes involved with another man. Ji-Sook′s ex-lover, Sang-Kwon, who aspires to be a college professor, goes on a trip to the same place with a university colleague. Sang-Kwon successfully finds a job as a professor, but he seeks out Ji-Sook again. They have led separate lives in two different spaces - Seoul and Kangwon province - and the dissonance between them and other characters reflects the contradictions of life and diversity of human emotions. A series of trivial episodes from where the film is constructed generate a peculiar reverberation throughout the film′s two-part structure, which makes a formal allusion to the duality of life. Hong uses only ambient sound and maintains a realistic viewpoint, perhaps in an effort to shed light on the fallacies in reality. (Lee Sang-Yong)
