Running a Lebanese restaurant called ‘Kayan,’ a divorcee Hanin always spends a busy hard day. She takes care of two daughters, barely pays the rent, and worries about money problems of her fiance. She even has to tolerate the complaints and mistreatment of customers and look after the employees who have issues. The only person who understands all this is a new customer who shows his interest toward her. But already engaged Hanin only finds him uncomfortable. ‘Kayan’ is usually filled with men who enjoy the traditional Arabian tobacco and alcohol. People find it unpleasant that a woman owns this kind of place. Though in a western city of Vancouver, the traditional customs of Lebanon are still burdensome for women who try to live independently. Set in a place for men, ‘Kayan,’ the film shows how women are oppressed and threatened and how they are actually surviving in a male-oriented society. It is a fine piece which gives a comprehensive depiction of characters in a restricted place by using a variety of episodes, serving as another example of Lebanese cinema which is distinguishing itself today.
