Program Note
A hopeless life is painful to lead on. Director Ho Yu-hang unfolds a story about the hopeless life of the young and old people of Malaysia. Lai, unemployed, kills his time playing billiards for money. Lai′s girlfriend, See, works at a photocopy shop, hoping Lai would get a job soon. But hope is only hope for her. Meanwhile, Lai′s grandfather refuses to live with Lai because he wants to take care of his old friend. Eventually, however, he has to go back to his grandson. Lai and See depend on each other, but in their stark reality, even love is a luxury. Lai′s grandfather returns home but the door is locked. The squat figure in front of the door seems like a sad portrait of Malaysians without a sanctuary. Why is this so? There is no family in this film. It implies that Lai, See, and Lai′s grandfather are all on their separate, lone journeys. Family solidarity is long gone. Yu-hang points out that, behind a modernized Malaysia, the family is slowly falling apart. (Kim Ji-seok)
