Program Note
After losing their parents, Pari and Chotu move into their uncle's home. Movies are the biggest joy in their lives. Sweet and smart Pari admires Shah Rukh Khan, while her blind yet lively brother likes Salman Khan. After seeing Shah Rukh Khan on a poster promoting eye donation, Pari writes to him every day asking him to help Chotu regain his sight. Nervously awaiting his reply, she discovers that he's filming a movie just 300 km away from her home, and she decides to take Chotu on a journey to meet him. Rainbow is a coming-of-age story, but it is also a tribute to Indian films. Fans will particularly enjoy the numerous quotes and homages to celebrated Indian films as well as the song and dance numbers so essential to this fantasy tale. At times, the film reflects aspects of Indian society so realistically, while at other times it reveals that the film, after all, is just a mystical tale—a truly beautiful fairy tale that leads us to a rainbow in the middle of the darkest night.
