Internationally acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle’s experimental fake documentary observes three generations of Hong Kong residents from two points of view. The resident’s point of view and the outsider’s point of view create an impressive double layer in the film’s three-part format. Voiceover interviews are real Hong Kong residents’ voices, speaking of their worldview and their concerns. In the meantime, all the visuals are carefully staged fictional images. In a dreamy ambience with faded colors on screen, the film focuses on how each generation’s ideals and dreams are realized. From the first part about a girl who asks “Why there are so many gods in the world?”, to the second part about youngsters dreaming of an alternative life and society through the Hong Kong Occupy movement, to the third part about the elderly on bus date. The fantasy aspect of the film becomes more evident and the interactions between generations increase as the film progresses. The finale, where all generations gather on the beach, reflects the true optimism that even though they are immersed in their own worries, they are persistent in communicating with one another.
