Program Note
The new work by Oscar-nominated director Fridrik Thor Fridriksson is dedicated to Icelandic landscape painter Georg Guðni Hauksson, who passed away in 2011 at age 50. Fascinated by such moments as when “the earth melts and changes to sky,” Hauksson pioneered Icelandic landscape painting’s renaissance with epoch-making interpretations on formats and ideas. The camera shows quite a few of Hauksson’s works, who mainly painted horizons, offering us the pleasure to appreciate the painter and his art. Pictures appear in a row, sometimes in parallel with real Icelandic landscapes. The painter himself comments, along with actors like Viggo Mortensen, and other experts’ interviews provide explanations on how his painting style changed. Relatively unknown in Korea, Hauksson held on to landscapes and was rightly called the “Child of Nature.” It allows the viewers great joy to watch and enjoy the calm and relaxing canvasses, peaceful on screen, absorbed in serene contemplation. Lyrical and easy music surrounds the pictures all along, providing a healing effect. (RHEE Soue-won)
