Program Note
Choi Seung-woo’s second fi lm holds its meaning in its title. No incident occurs; as the fi lm unfolds, it’s hard to tell who the protagonist is. There is no dialogue. The people say nothing, silently enduring the course of a winter. Other characters remain equally wordless. Even the passengers packed into the subway train at rush hour, who appear repeatedly at regular, rhythmic intervals, do not speak. They walk down an alley at dawn and climb steep stairs late at night, commuting to and from labor. Some might say it is the story of one man. Others might add a man doing demolition work inside a house. Still others might add a woman to the mix. However, within this empty network, the only thing they have in common is that they are spending that winter working in Seoul, cold and poor. Do not build a story. Observe them. (JUNG Sung-il)
