Shining Boy and Little Randy is a family drama based on a true story of a boy who can communicate with elephants. In the late 1980s, there lived a family who took care of all kinds of animals at Okawa Animal Production, located at Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Having unrelentingly managed the household, mother′s wish is to raise elephants. On the day the difficult to obtain elephant first arrived, Tetsumu understood what the elephant was saying. Consequently, Tetsumu decided to become an elephant trainer. In the film, while he slowly grows up taming and sharing emotions with elephants in Thailand, Tetsumu and his family look back on the delicate rift that existed among them, and reflect on the true meaning of being a family. The actor who plays Japan′s first elephant trainer at junior high-age is none other than Yagira Yuya, who shook Japan by being awarded Best Leading Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in Nobody Knows. There′s such enjoyment in watching Yagira′s performance; he never loses his sense of self within the surroundings. And listening to the music of Sakamoto Ryuichi as it portrays the boy′s sentiments going to and fro between Thailand and Japan is an equal pleasure. (Kwon Yong-min)
