Program Note
The latest film by Kim Ki-Young, Carnivore is a remake of the 1972 the Insect Woman. The usual themes are present: Declining patriarchal authority, conflicts between the wife and her husband′s secret love, and disintegration of the family.
Dong-Shik is the owner of a publishing company, but a castrated patriarch at home. His wife supports the family with real estate deals after Kim′s business starts to fail. Kim gets involved with a waitress at a bar he frequents. Kim′s wife accepts his indiscretion hoping it might cure his impotence, but Kim drifts away from his family. The film ends with the tragic death of Kim and his lover. The Freudian approach to treating Kim′s sexual problems through childhood regressions provides an intellectual touch to this psychological thriller. (Lee Young-Kwan)
a who is overshadowed by his wife’s flourishing real estate business. Dong-Sik eventually sets up another household with a bar hostess. Although the wife and the hostess agree to sharing him, such agreements are bound to fail: Dong-Sik becomes lazy, his family life crumbles, and finally, he meets an unfortunate end.
