Program Note
This is a documentary-animation by French director Michel Gondry in the form of illustrated interviews with US linguist and political commentator Noam Chomsky. If the 19th-century had Saussure as its linguist, the 20th century linguistics cannot be discussed without mentioning Noam Chomsky, the creator of transformational grammar. Rather than focusing on Chomsky’s internationally renowned politics, Gondry addresses his achievements as a scholar. In order to make his linguistics
theory more accessible to the public, animations and crooked fonts are employed. Questions are asked about his parents, deceased wife, and children to make this prominent scholar more human. The title of the film refers to Chomsky’s book, Syntactic Structures, 1957, which caused an uproar in linguistics. In it, he explains that to make the statement, “The man who is tall is happy” into an interrogative sentence is the instinctive result of a creative human mind. This film makes it easier to understand Chomsky’s theory. The pair also makes an interesting balance ? the bubbling personality of Gondry mixed with the serious professor discussing mathematics and linguistics. (RHEE Soue-won)
