Program Note
“When we edited the film, I was surprised to realize that contrary to expectations, the film was not about a woman who gets lost. In fact, it was about a woman who saved herself.” ? Gael Morel
Morel’s exploration of the mourning process centers on Camille, a mother grieving over the loss of her son. Camille clings to every vestige of her son that she can find, and that includes his best friend Franck. Her attentions toward him are not understood by anyone around her: Franck was responsible for the car accident that killed her son. But Franck responds to Camille until he realizes her attentions might be dangerous. Camille’s internalized anguish is difficult for everyone to comprehend, including Camille, and Catherine Deneuve’s performance as the grieving mother is mesmerizing and believable, always avoiding histrionics ? and is one of her strongest in years.
