Program Note
Known for his politically and socially charged films, Ken Loach returns with a drama examining the consequences of the exploitation of immigrant labor. Angie and her roommate Rose ? sick of working for someone else ? open a business recruiting immigrants. Bending the law and operating in the shadows offers them a chance to make a fortune, but at a steep cost. Inspired by vanishing job security for workers and increasing contract work, Loach takes all forms of government to task for perpetrating the illusion of a free market that makes all of us believe the abuse of workers is a natural result of modernization ? from the point of view of the exploiter. Loach and writer Paul Laverty “thought in this case it would be interesting just to look at the attitudes and the mindset of people who were on the other side… Making a film about the exploited seemed too predictable.”
