Program Note
“In the main bazaar of Darra Adam Khel the Kalashnikov and a variety of small arms are displayed in the open just as vegetables are in a conventional market. Volleys of gunfire sound above the traffic noise and Islamic prayers as customers test potential purchases… In the post 9/11 world… I was distressed by the way Pashtun people were being referred to by western media and governments… and I felt compelled to try and show the world what the people I had spent time with were really like.” ? Benjamin Gilmour
Eleven-year-old Niaz lives in northern Pakistan, working the family business making guns, but he’d rather go to school in Peshawar. Like Meisie, also screening this year, Son of a Lion illuminates a pre-destined world for children with no access to education and who desperately crave it. And in the post-9/11 world, education may be our only hope for salvation.
Director
Benjamin GILMOUR
Benjamin Gilmour, a Sydney-based ambulance officer, became interested in filmmaking while working as a unit nurse on UK film sets. A seasoned traveller and writer, Gilmour fell in love with the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). In 2004 Gilmour based himself in Pakistan for eight months of pre-production, slowly making contacts and building relationships with assistance of Executive Producer Hayat Khan Shinwari.
