Program Note
Roos and Martin are parents to a depressed 17-year-old, Isaac, who’s breaking into houses and increasingly withdrawing into himself. Together they seek a resolution, but are hampered by their shared past: they are divorced, but not completely detached from each other. Their conversations are laced with blame and accusations, and contrast with Isaac’s nearly silent existence. As in her earlier film, Bluebird, director de Jong avoids sentimentalizing the situation in favor of clear-eyed examination. The partially improvised film ? created with the help of the lead actors Elsie de Brauw and Marcel Musters, and writer and art director Jolein Laarman ? is rich with naturalistic, realistic dialogue, and the performances from de Brauw and Musters ring truer as the time in the film passes ? and as they move closer to personal closure.
